Notes
Start with an attention grabbing story or statement.
(e.g. “Do your eyes itch?” “Are you a victim of bullying?” (Or tell a short story)
What is your topic/mission statement? Define the problem and add your solution. (eg “We should all work together to end Bullying. Join the Bully crusade. We need each other! We need you! Join the anti-bully march on Saturday April 25th”)
What is the main point (goal) you want the audience to understand?
Why do we need to take this issue seriously?
Arguments should build on each other and use persuasive devices.
Devices include:
*Use examples
*Parallelism (power of 3) Statistics Variety of sentence lengths
*Personal testimony Emotive words
Imperatives Repetition Listing Rhetorical questions
Humour Imperatives
Contrast (e.g. life of OFS student compared to starving child in west Africa)
First person Alliteration Simile Hyperbole Metaphor
What is your first point?
How and why is this important to your audience and your goal?
What is your second point?
How and why is this important?
What is your third point?
How and why is this important?
ACTION
What action are you suggesting?
What does the audience need to do if they want to respond to your message? BE CLEAR ABOUT THE STEPS THEY NEED TO TAKE.
Conclusion
Clear final sentence that will stay in people’s minds (e.g. What if it was you?)
End with a clear call to action. Use an imperative.
At the end also explain which persuasive techniques you have used and why (only for the campaign site, you don’t say this in your speech).
* The speech needs to be uploaded to your campaign site.
* If you have notes on the day that do suit the specified criteria they will be taken away from you
